Under-Cabinet Waste Bin Guide: Measure Before You Install

Measure clear cabinet width, depth, plumbing clearance and mounting points before choosing a 20 L under-cabinet bin.

An under-cabinet waste bin can free up visible kitchen floor space, but fitting one without measuring the actual cabinet interior is a common mistake. Nominal capacity and the outside width of the cabinet door do not describe the usable installation envelope. Hinges, plumbing, mounting hardware and the way the door moves must all be considered.

Measure clear internal space

Open the cabinet door completely. Record the clear opening width, usable depth to the nearest obstruction and clear height. Face frames, hinges and cabinet sides can reduce the available opening. Under a sink, measure the drain trap and supply hoses at the height the bin will occupy, not only at floor level.

Verify the specific mounting system

Cabinet bins may mount to a wall, floor or door; other systems use a pull-out slide. These mechanisms are not interchangeable. The AKA Cabinet Bin is listed at 20 liters and its catalogue photographs show side mounting brackets. Those photographs alone do not prove it has rails, automatic door linkage or a particular set of included fittings. Confirm the actual installation method and package contents first.

Test door travel and plumbing clearance

Before drilling, make a cardboard mock-up of the proposed container footprint and height. Open and close the cabinet door, and check whether a filled bag can be lifted out and the unit cleaned. If attaching hardware to the door, check door thickness, screw lengths and the strength of the mounting area. A screw should not pierce the cabinet front.

Is 20 L the right capacity?

The 20 L figure identifies the recorded capacity of the AKA cabinet model; it is not a universal kitchen recommendation. Consider household waste volume, collection frequency and rim dimensions. For food waste, timely emptying and access for cleaning may be more important than maximizing capacity. Read our bin capacity guide for a separate sizing method.

Check the liner and removal route

A liner must fit the container opening and remain secure. Test how the bag will be taken out without catching on plumbing or cabinet hardware. If an inner bucket is detachable, make sure it can be removed through the free opening. Our liner measurement guide explains why liter ratings alone cannot identify bag size.

Protect the cabinet from moisture

A slow leak or standing water can damage cabinet board and weaken screw fixings. Keep the area dry, check plumbing for leaks and avoid attaching brackets to swollen or crumbling panels. Clean metal surfaces according to their actual finish, taking care not to damage adjacent cabinet material with harsh chemicals.

Installation and buying checklist

Write down clear width, depth to the trap, available height, door swing, hinge location, fixing strength and the route for removing waste. Ask the supplier for exact model dimensions, mounting parts and instructions. See the AKA Cabinet Bin product page for the recorded model.

Frequently asked questions

Do all cabinet bins slide out with the door?

No. Door-mounted, side-mounted and slide-out mechanisms differ. Verify the selected model rather than assuming door linkage.

Can I order using cabinet door width alone?

No. Interior clearance, hinges, plumbing and the removal path must be measured as well.

What if the cabinet floor is damp?

Resolve leaks and damaged panels before attaching hardware or storing the bin inside.

Choose by how you will use the bin

  • Measure clear cabinet width, depth to plumbing and available height separately.
  • Confirm mounting brackets and door clearance using the exact model instructions.
  • The listed dimensions of this 20 L model do not guarantee cabinet compatibility without a fitting drawing.

Confirm material, finish and model-specific features on each product page. Sample photos may show a different capacity from the dimensions listed; measurements do not include lid-opening or pedal clearance.

What should you do next?

Under a sink, check the drain trap, hinges and path for removing a full liner, not just the cabinet height. Catalogue images alone do not establish whether a sliding mechanism is included.
