304 vs 201 Stainless Steel for Waste Bins: Buyer Guide
Understand practical differences between stainless steel grades 304 and 201 without relying on appearance alone.

Understand practical differences between stainless steel grades 304 and 201 without relying on appearance alone.
Stainless steel is a family of alloys
The term stainless steel does not identify one metal grade. Grades 304 and 201 differ in composition, and performance depends on the working environment and fabrication quality.
General differences between 304 and 201
Grade 304 generally contains more nickel and tends to offer better corrosion resistance across many environments than grade 201. Neither grade is immune to corrosion in all conditions.
Can you identify the grade by a photo?
No. A brushed or polished appearance cannot verify composition. A simple magnet check is not a conclusive grade test. Request reliable technical documentation where material grade affects the purchasing decision.
Care in wet environments
Moisture, salts and unsuitable cleaners can damage stainless surfaces over time. Match the metal, finish and cleaning routine to the intended conditions.
Check model-specific claims
Do not assume every AKA Luxury product uses grade 304. Review the specification of the exact model and its available finishes in the product catalogue.

A concise material comparison
Both 201 and 304 are austenitic stainless steel grades. Typical 304 formulations contain more nickel, while 201 uses more manganese to replace some of that nickel. Material grade matters, but fabrication, finishing and chemical exposure affect service life too.
Why the magnet test is inconclusive
Magnetic attraction alone does not confirm whether a product is 201 or 304. Some austenitic stainless steels become partially magnetic after cold working. Use reliable supplier documentation and appropriate materials testing when grade verification is essential.
What AKA product listings actually say
Current AKA Luxury product records explicitly identify AKA Pedal Bin and Sabalan Pedal Bin as 304 stainless steel. The Hilux listing says only “stainless steel.” Without a model-specific grade declaration, it would be misleading to call every AKA bin 304.
